Council is seeking feedback from young people in the Tweed on the proposed Youth Outdoor Recreation Action Plan which aims to improve outdoor recreation facilities across the Tweed.

Did Council hear youth correctly? Young people aged between 12 and 24 years are invited to complete a quick survey to understand if the proposed Youth and Outdoor Recreation Action Plan is what young people want.

As a thank you for completing the survey, youth will gain FREE entry to a Splash, Movie ‘n’ DJ night on Friday 22 November at the Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre, Murwillumbah to swim, slide, listen to tunes and watch ‘Jumanji - Welcome to the Jungle’ on the big inflatable screen. Tickets are limited so don’t miss your chance to grab yours.

In 2020, 550 young people aged 12 to 24 completed surveys and joined in co-design workshops to brainstorm ideas for new outdoor youth spaces, recreation facilities, events and activities in the Tweed.

Tweed Shire Council’s Manager Parks and Active Communities Murray Smith said the ideas contributed by young people about their vision for the Tweed have now been incorporated into a new plan.

“We’ve used these ideas to create the Youth Outdoor Recreation Action Plan, and we’re eager to hear feedback from young people so we can begin moving forward with these projects,” Mr Smith said.

“The action plan will help us build recreational facilities that meet the needs of Tweed youth both today and into the future.

“Council is inviting both young people and the broader community to review the action plan and complete the survey. This will ensure we deliver a plan the community wants.”

The proposed action plan highlights 4 key areas for improvement across the Tweed:

  • youth friendly spaces

  • skateboarding facilities and scooter areas

  • bike facilities including an urban bike park, pump track, BMX track

  • outdoor events and activities.

The action plan builds on the extensive community engagement conducted to develop Council’s Open Space Strategy 2019–2029 with children, youth and the broader community.

Other key actions of the Open Space Strategy 2019–2029 have since been implemented, providing opportunities for young people to be active and healthy including the Mountain Bike Park at Uki and the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.

The proposed Youth Outdoor Recreation Action Plan is on public exhibition from now until Wednesday 27 November 2024.

Residents will have the opportunity to speak to Council staff about the proposed plans for the future at pop up stalls and events throughout the Tweed during November.
