Tweed Shire Council is seeking community feedback on a draft concept plan to upgrade Crabbes Creek Community Hall, making it a more safe and inclusive space for gatherings, events and activities.
The upgrade, totalling $538,560, represents an exciting investment as part of a $15.5 million funding package from the Australian and NSW governments. This initiative aims to restore and enhance community assets impacted by storms or floods.
After suffering flood damage in 2022, Crabbes Creek Community Hall will undergo renovations with flood-resistant materials and design elements to be used to minimise the impact of future flood events.
Community members are invited to learn more and discuss the upgrades with Council staff at the Crabbes Creek Community Hall on Thursday 25 July, from 4.30 pm to 6 pm.
Manager Inclusive & Creative Communities Shannon Carruth said the upgrade would ensure the hall is a safer, more inviting and inclusive space for residents and visitors.
“During the flood in February 2022, the hall suffered damage, leading to significant impacts on both its internal and external features,” Ms Carruth said.
“To ensure the hall can welcome all members of the community regardless of their ability, the refurbishment will incorporate features such as accessible toilet amenities, accessible car park and safe, linking pathways. The addition of an accessible public toilet will also offer essential amenities for visitors and users of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.
“After the upgrade, the hall will be equipped to function as a more secure and welcoming venue for gatherings, events and activities that bring our community together for years to come.”
Proposed works at Crabbes Creek Community Hall include:
-
refurbishment of the building, both exterior and interior works
-
accessible parking space
-
unisex accessible public toilet available for public use
-
unisex accessible toilet, one female and one male ambulant toilet designated for use exclusively by the hall
-
connecting pathways
-
bike rack
-
new water tanks
-
relocation of the existing sewer system
-
new awning, to be delivered as stage two. Final design and size of awning is pending community feedback, heritage approval and available funds.
