Tweed residents can help restore wildlife habitat and learn about regenerative agriculture techniques at free community events to mark World Environment Day next week.
World Environment Day is on Wednesday 5 June and Council is helping to promote this year’s theme ‘our land, our future’ which focusses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience.
To align with the theme, Council will host a community tree planting day at Kynnumboon, near Murwillumbah, on Sunday 2 June.
Attendees can experience a range of activities at this family-friendly event, from tours of the revegetation site to an Indigenous welcome to Country. When the time comes to put down the tools, participants can purchase hot beverages and lunch from the on-site food and drink van.
The tree planting event is part of one of the biggest restoration projects in the Tweed. More than three hectares of land has been planted, with more than 12,000 native trees, shrubs and groundcovers providing rainforest habitat for flying-foxes and other fauna.
Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry said the day would be a fun celebration with positive outcomes.
“Restoring this native forest is one way we can help protect the Tweed’s unique biodiversity and ensure the next generation continues to enjoy these wonderful surrounds,” Cr Cherry said.
“From guided walking tours to picturesque views, there’s something for everyone at this free community event.”
Activities continue with a farm ‘Walk and Talk’ at Lexie and Anastasia Gunn’s farm at Terragon, near Uki, on Thursday 6 June.
Join Anastasia, Lexie and Council’s Sustainable Agriculture team to learn about the latest trend in regenerative agriculture – pasture cropping.
Tired of battling pasture dieback and struggling against invasive broad-leaved weeds, Anastasia and Lexie are trialling pasture cropping to improve their soil and pasture management practices.
The trial, which is supported by Council’s Sustainable Agriculture Small Grants Program, is showing some positive results as farmers continue to explore local solutions for pasture dieback.
Registrations are essential for both events – see below for more information.
