Major road works on Tweed Coast Road will prepare the area to better cater for future growth and increased traffic volumes.
Planning is well underway for the widening of the road to four lanes which will improve traffic flow and safety for motorists using Tweed Coast Road.
Council urges motorists to slow down and drive to the conditions as several major projects continue along Tweed Coast Road.
Council’s Director of Engineering David Oxenham said the widening of Tweed Coast Road from Morton Street at Chinderah to Grand Parade at Casuarina is being designed to cater for future growth.
“The widening to a 4-lane configuration will accommodate future traffic capacity and improve safety for residents, businesses and tourists and is part of Council’s commitment to deliver a safe and connected local road network,” Mr Oxenham said.
“This major project will be delivered in stages and will take many years to complete. In the meantime, the existing road needs to be maintained to ensure connectivity and the safety of motorists.”
In the interim, Council is continuing its road maintenance program on the road with several works scheduled over the coming months:
Tweed Coast Road between Cudgen Road and Noble Lake
Council has engaged NSW Spray Seal to reseal 2 sections of Tweed Coast Road between Cudgen Road and Noble Lake. The works are scheduled to start on Saturday 15 October and will take about 2 days to complete, weather permitting. These works have been planned to occur over the weekend to minimise traffic disruption. Some preparation works will be required before hand and these will be completed during non-peak hours to avoid high volume of traffic. To ensure the safety of motorists and road crews, there will be brief temporary road closures while bitumen spraying is undertaken which may cause up to 10‑minute delays. Traffic controllers will be on site to direct traffic. Please take an alternative route where possible.
Tweed Coast Road between Plantation Road and Old Bogangar Road
Heavy asphalt patching will be undertaken over 2 nights, weather permitting, in late October/early November. Lane closures which may cause up to 5‑minute delays.
“We will always endeavour to minimise the impact our projects have on the community. This could mean rescheduling planned works in an area where community events are booked or coordinate planned and flood recovery works to occur at the same time in the same area to minimise traffic delays,” Mr Oxenham said.
“Depending on the volume of day-time traffic, we may also look into doing weekend or nightworks.
We appeal to motorists to be patient while these important works are carried out.”
Mr Oxenham said in addition to Council’s maintenance works, there are currently several major construction projects in the area that may cause disruptions to motorists and pedestrians which are being undertaken by various developers.
“Council has no control over the timing of their construction,” Mr Oxenham said.

The Kingscoast developer is constructing a subdivision near Tweed Coast Road. Roadworks are underway at Crescent Street. For any queries, contact the onsite manager Braeden Alexanderson on 0457 457 800.
“To help motorists plan their trip, where we have been provided the information, we will publish changes to traffic conditions on our roadworks and closures page,” Mr Oxenham said.
“We ask motorists to use alternative routes where possible. If you must take Tweed Coast Road, please have patience, slow down, be aware of and drive to changed traffic conditions.”
