Brisbane Street road closure this weekend

Sewer rising main works to cross Brisbane Street in Murwillumbah

Brisbane Street will be closed at Wollumbin Street over the weekend as a sewer rising main is installed across the street.

Works to install a new sewer rising main across Brisbane Street in Murwillumbah have been scheduled over the weekend to minimise disruption to residents, businesses, motorists and public transport.

Manager Infrastructure Delivery Tim Mackney said the works to install the new sewer rising main between Commercial Road and Nullum Street will ensure Murwillumbah has the capacity to manage increased flow levels to cater for the growing population.

“Council crews will start digging across Brisbane Street on Saturday 19 February and weather permitting, they’ll be done the following day,” Mr Mackney said.

“There will be deep trenches over 2 metres deep across Brisbane Street, so to ensure public safety and the safety of our crews the road will be closed during this time.”

Brisbane Street will be closed at the corner of Wollumbin Street during the installation of the new pipe. Detours will be in place and traffic controllers will be on site.

The works will be undertaken on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 February, from midday to late into the evening.

“We ask motorists and pedestrians to drive with care around the work site. Please follow roadworks and safety signs as well as instructions from traffic controllers.

“There may be restricted access to some properties. If you are affected, please ask traffic controllers for assistance.

“This road crossing is part of the larger project underway in the area. Thank you for your patience and understanding as the new sewer rising main is installed and the Wollumbin Street beautification works are completed.”

The sewer works are expected to be completed by late March 2022 and have been scheduled to coincide with the Wollumbin Street beautification to minimise disruption to residents and motorists.

The beautification works to create a greener, welcoming and more vibrant public space is on schedule and is expected to be completed by mid-April. Parts of Wollumbin Street are cordoned off while new footpaths are being installed.
