Community views wanted on future of rugby league in Tweed

Have your say on draft Piggabeen Sports Complex master plan

Have your say on a new 10-year master plan for the Piggabeen Sports Complex.

Council has partnered with the community to draft a 10-year plan for the Piggabeen Sports Complex, currently home to the Tweed’s only Intrust Super Cup rugby league team.

The draft plan includes a range of improvements including new playing fields, spectator seating and lighting as well as a new playground, exercise equipment and pathways.

Council’s Acting Manager Parks and Active Communities Murray Smith said the community’s input would help refine the draft master plan drawings, which in turn would inform the final outcomes of the project.

“The Piggabeen Sports complex is the Tweed’s primary rugby league sporting facility and is highly valued by the local community,” Mr Smith said.

“The draft design has been directly influenced by the input of key stakeholders, with a working group of the predominant users of the site, including Tweed Seagulls and Tweed Seagulls Juniors, informing planning to date.

“This initial engagement has enabled the development of a concept plan which is now being presented to the broader community.

“It is the intention of this concept plan to improve current uses on the site and also broaden the opportunity for community use including a new playground. This has been possible by repurposing areas of sporting infrastructure which are in poor condition and are no longer used.”

The Draft Piggabeen Sports Complex Masterplan is a key outcome from Council’s Open Space Strategy and will consider the next 10-year period from 2022 to 2032.

The plan will guide future sports infrastructure development and investment, both by Council and the clubs through funding applications and/or club capital investments.
