Some Council facilities will be temporarily closed as part of measures to protect residents and staff following stay-at-home orders issued for neighbouring areas.
The closures are effective immediately and will be in place until the lockdown is lifted. Facilities affected by the closures include:
- Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre
- Tweed Regional Museum
- Tweed JUNKtion Tip Shop
- Library branches at Murwillumbah, Tweed Heads and Kingscliff (*click and collect loan services will remain, mobile printing service available upon request)
- Visitor Information Centres
- Council events
- Council-approved community markets, including at Kingscliff, SALT Village, Pottsville, Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads.
The closures follow a decision by the NSW Government to lockdown the neighbouring local government areas of Byron Shire, Richmond Valley, Lismore and Ballina Shire until 12.01am on Tuesday 17 August.
All essential Council services including water, waste water and kerbside waste collection will continue as per normal.
Other Council facilities, including contact centres at Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads, holiday parks and aquatic centres, will also remain open, with strict COVID-Safe measures in place.
Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry said Council was doing all it could to ensure the safety of customers and staff.
“With positive cases of COVID-19 right on our doorstep, it’s crucial we remain ultra-vigilant over the coming days and weeks ahead,” Cr Cherry said.
“While the Tweed has not been included in the current stay-at-home orders, a significant number of Council staff and customers either live in these areas or are affected by the order.
“We’ve taken these measures to help minimise non-essential movement and travel around the region in support of the NSW Government’s stay-at-home order.
“I urge everyone to stay safe, comply with the stay-at-home orders if you have been to one of the locked-down areas, and to check-in at all outlets using your QR code scanner.
“Anyone displaying even the mildest of COVID-19 symptoms should get tested and isolate at home until a negative result is returned.”
