Making the Tweed a great place to live, work and visit

Local Government Week kicks off in the Tweed

From loos to curlews, Local Government Week offers the chance to highlight the major role Council plays in the everyday lives of Tweed residents.

Tweed Shire Council is joining councils across NSW to participate in Local Government Week from 2 to 8 August, with the theme of this year’s event being ‘Locally Led’.

Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry said most knew Council was responsible for local roads, rates and rubbish but fewer people were aware of the many other services Council provides.

“Council is responsible for so many other things,” Cr Cherry said.

“We are the proud operators of the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre and the Tweed Regional Museum – both of which have won national recognition for excellence.

“We provide spaces for community groups, administer grants, and maintain playgrounds, sporting fields and aquatic centres.

“We are committed to caring for our internationally significant environment, with extensive programs to protect threatened wildlife such as koalas and Bush and Beach Stone-curlews.

“We also advocate for the interests of our community in planning matters and other issues that affect local liveability, sustainability, safety and amenity. For example, currently we’re seeking community feedback on where you’d like to see public toilets in the Tweed as well as 2 new fenced off-leash dog parks.

“Local Government Week provides a chance for people to discover just how much local government does and how they can become more involved in Council activities.”

Unfortunately, due to the rapidly changing COVID-19 situation, activities planned to mark Local Government Week this week have been postponed, including a planned activation at Tweed City on Wednesday 4 August.

However, this week’s Council meeting will still go ahead at 5:30 pm in the Harvard Room at Tweed Heads Administration Office on Thursday 5 August. Bookings are essential to attend in person, or follow from home on the livestream at tweed.nsw.gov.au/council-meetings.
