Poets Out Loud is on the lookout for young writers to take the stage as part of its youth poetry slam: a live spoken-word competition with amazing prizes.

Young people aged 12-18 years have the chance to stand up, speak up, and be heard in this unique performance presented as a satellite event at the Regent Theatre in Murwillumbah by the Byron Writers Festival.

The free event will be held on Friday, 26 August 2022 from 6 pm to 8 pm and will feature the 2021 Australian Poetry champion Huda Fadlelmawla.

There are big prizes up for grabs with $400 cash to the winning poet along with publication of the winning poem.

Now in its third year, the Poets Out Loud Youth Program, supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW and Tweed Shire Council, has connected with 19 schools and hundreds of young people from Casino to Kingscliff, empowering them to speak up through poetry.

Poets Out Loud’s Sarah Temporal said all the young poets who have previously been involved have really valued this experience, connecting with other like-minded individuals and professional mentors.

“I just feel so inspired and happy that I could express myself and share my voice and what I really value in life,” 2021 Poets Out Loud Youth Slam winner Imani Hannaford said.

Sarah Temporal will host the Poets Out Loud Youth Slam at the Regent Cinema in Murwillumbah on August 26, as part of the Byron Writers Festival. Bookings are essential.
