Tweed figures reveal jobs creation on rise

Unemployment in the Tweed dropped back to a level it was before the lockdowns and employment uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In recent Federal Government figures released for the March 2022 quarter, unemployment in the Tweed was at 3.8% which is lower than the NSW rate of 4.6%.
A breakdown of unemployment in the Tweed from March 2021 to March this year showed a contrast in locations, which could be dependent on the availability of jobs.
The national unemployment rate dropped from 6.7% in March 2021 to 4.6% in March 2022.
There were 8 areas recorded in the Tweed: Murwillumbah, Murwillumbah region, North Tumbulgum – Terranora, Kingscliff – Fingal Head, Banora Point, Tweed Heads South and Tweed Heads.
The biggest reduction was in Tweed Heads South which saw unemployment rates drop from 8% in March 2021 to 5.9% in March 2022, a drop of 2.1%.
Pottsville recorded the next biggest decline from 4.9% to 3.1% – dropping 1.8%.
Murwillumbah’s unemployment rate dropped from 7.3% in March 2021 to 5.8% by March 2022.
Council's Economic Development Officer Mark Tickle said these latest unemployment figures showed the economy in the Tweed was bouncing back.
“Despite the significant disruptions to the economy and jobs, we are starting to see a turn around," Mr Tickle said.
“Although it has some ways to go, the Tweed economy is back on the road to prosperity.”
