Kids’ artwork at Koala Beach to raise wildlife awareness
11 December 2023
A colourful mural along the Cudgera Avenue bridge at the entrance to Koala Beach estate at Pottsville was officially unveiled recently.
Members of Council’s Koala Beach Wildlife and Habitat Management Committee worked with Year 6 students from the nearby Pottsville Beach Public School to develop a mural featuring local flora and fauna along the length of the bridge.
The aim of the project is to increase awareness about the importance of Koala Beach estate as a Wildlife Protection Area through the art.
Committee member Rosealie Valance was instrumental in activating the project and working with the students and the school to make the project a reality.
“It was wonderful to work with the local school children and the school who are committed to supporting the environment in the area in which we live,” Ms Valance said.
“The project was about engaging the local children on importance of maintaining the unique qualities of Koala Beach estate, ensuring the habitat is maintained for the 24 threatened species that live in and around the estate. The artwork was an opportunity for the children’s voices to be heard and their creativity to be seen.”
Committee member and local artist Noel Hart was thrilled with the outcome after supporting the students with their artwork and helping to bring the work to life in mural form.
“Connecting the kids to the environment that they live in and the manifestation of that in a visual form was one of the reasons I saw the opportunity and wanted to get involved with this project,” Mr Hart said.
Council and the committee would like to thank the Pottsville Beach Public School and Year 6 students for their valuable contribution to a project that the community in Pottsville can admire for years to come.
