FABS (Fun Activities for Banora Seniors) is celebrating its 15-year connecting local seniors through fun, interest-based group activities.

The Stretch Your Mind program has been a staple of FABs since it began. The Stretch your Mind group meet weekly to enjoy activities designed to improve brain fitness in older age – and be a whole lot of fun in the process.

Two members of the group, Bert and Alison, are also celebrating their 15th year of marriage, having met at FABS a few weeks after the program started!

Bert remembers coming to his first Stretch Your Mind group with no expectations.

“I was one of the very first. I thought I’d give it a go after seeing an ad in the local paper”

A few weeks after Bert started, Alison came to her first Stretch Your Mind group. She remembers the host giving them a creative exercise involving newspaper, which she used to create an outfit for Bert.

“We had a lot of fun. I still remember it,” she laughed.

Bert and Alison, who live at Crystal Creek, often make the drive to Banora Point to attend Stretch Your Mind, and not just for the program itself, but for the social aspect too.

“I like that the activities are always different. It’s fun to see what your mind comes up with - we always have a laugh,” Bert said.

Stretch your Mind runs as part of the FABS program every Friday from 10.30 am to 12 pm at the Banora Point Community Centre.

Stretch Your Mind is proudly funded by My Aged Care.

Council is currently asking for expressions of interest from seniors if they’d like the Stretch Your Mind Program to run in Murwillumbah.
