Chinderah Community Hub extends services
21 June 2024
In welcome news for those in the community still struggling to deal with economic survival long after the 2022 floods, the Chinderah Community Hub (CCH) has received additional funding to keep its support services going until next year.
Created from the need to assist those impacted by the devastating floods of 2002, the future of the CCH remained uncertain going into 2024.
However, thanks to funding from government and non-government sources, they will remain in operation at Chinderah until mid-2025.
Not only will the Hub continue with its current services of providing low-cost food items, referrals for various support agencies and a place where the community can meet, the not-for – profit now has access to the refurbished Chinderah Scout Hall in Chinderah Road.
At the hall, the CCH will be holding a Community Closet on the last Wednesday of each month where community members can come along and select men's and women's clothing from a wide range of quality and new donated items.
CCH Co-ordinator Kay Redman said for many, the floods of 2022 may seem a long time ago, but there are people who are still trying to rebuild their lives after that event.
“The trauma and anguish cause by the flood is still with a lot of people who we deal with but for them, knowing that we are here to support them provides some comfort,” Ms Redman said.
“Our Community Closet is open to everyone from 9:30 am to 12 pm. Not only will it give people an opportunity to bolster their wardrobes and self-esteem in tough times but give them some dignity and we intend to have low-cost hair services starting in July 2024 as well.
“It also is a great, sustainable way of recycling clothes which we know Council is very eager to promote.
“The Chinderah Scott Hall is also more accessible for the Chinderah community, but we will still be operating Tuesday to Thursday 9 am to 3pm at our Ozone Street premises.
“Having some financial security allows us to continue with helping those in most need and expand our ability to support the wider community.
“We are looking to hold a breakfast for men on a fortnightly basis to provide them with the opportunity to come together and talk about issues which concern them. We will have details on our Facebook site shortly.”
