Cats of the Tweed loving their new enclosures

Winners of the ‘Keeping Cats Safe at Home’ expression of interest were announced earlier this year with 36 Tweed residents receiving a $500 voucher to Catnets to purchase a cat haven and /or cat enrichment products. The owners got straight to work to make their cats a safe haven and the cats have never been happier!

Dex from Banora Point is one of those lucky cats who is now the proud recipient of a 1.8 metre freestanding cat enclosure along with some artificial cat grass, a hammock and shadesail cloth.

His owner, Marcus, also purchased a cat door and inserted it into the flyscreen and a pet fence which he made into a tunnel to give Dex access from the screen door to the cat enclosure.

Marcus has observed some noticeable changes in his cat's behaviour and overall wellbeing since setting up the enclosure.

“My cat seems to be more relaxed and less anxious now,” Marcus said.

“Before, he would startle easily and hide whenever there was a loud noise or unexpected disturbance. However, since we've made the home safer and no access for other animals to wander in, he seems to feel more secure. I've noticed that he now sleeps better and is much more loving toward me and visitors.

“His playfulness has increased, running in and out of the tunnel jumping into the hammock over to the chairs, turning the cat grass upside down. It's as if he's more confident and willing to explore his environment, knowing there are fewer potential hazards. This has been a joy to witness as it demonstrates his increased comfort and happiness in our home.”

Marcus noted that while it’s helped his cat, he wishes other owners would also keep their animals inside.

“It’s concerning how many other dogs and cats appear at the cat net during the night, causing my cat to get a little excited to say the least,” he said.

Marcus has advice for others who may be considering keeping their cats safe at home.

“Do it and do it now. If you love your fur baby and want a better companion, spend a minimal amount (less than a vet bill) and have a happier and more content feline friend," he said.

“Remember that every cat is unique, so it's essential to tailor your safety measures and care routine to your cat's specific needs and preferences. I purchased a net that was high enough and big enough to put a couple of chairs in, as mine loves to have me out there with my morning coffee and chatting with him and patting him. It’s about keeping your cat safe and happy at home.”

Creating a safe and enriching environment for cats not only protects them from potential hazards but also allows them to explore, play and thrive. If you have a new kitten, introducing it into a safe, protected environment early on will set them up for a fulfilling contented life. Outdoor roaming cats face numerous risks, including exposure to diseases, vehicle accidents and the potential for theft or getting lost.

Keeping cats safe at home also contributes to the preservation of local wildlife and is part of Council’s commitment to protecting the Tweed’s internationally significant environment to pass on to the next generation.

Tweed Shire Council partnered with RSPCA NSW on its Keeping Cats Safe at Home campaign about loving cats, celebrating the people who love their cats and motivating cat lovers to keep their feline companions safe and fulfilled on their property.

The NSW-wide project is funded by a $2.5 million grant from the NSW Environmental Trust.
