Tyalgum Road temporary closure trigger
The record floods of February and March 2022 resulted in considerable damage to Tyalgum Road, including an extreme landslip some 3 km from the intersection of Limpinwood Road at Tyalgum village.
Council has engaged contractor SEE Civil Pty Ltd to restore the road and while major reconstruction work is being carried out, a temporary single-lane access for motorists has been established at the slip site on Tyalgum Road.
Updates and SMS alert Triggers for closure
The temporary road, opened in October 2023, operates under traffic light control with automatic gates at either end able to control access to the roadway if required.
Due to the nature of the construction site and for safety reasons, the temporary access lane is closely monitored.
Heavy rains or possible slip movements will trigger actions which may result in automatic gates at the site closing, preventing access in the interests of public safety.

Road status updates will be posted on Council's social media platforms.

Triggers for gate closure
There are 3 levels involved:
Closed - road closed due to rain
This is triggered by the area receiving more than 125 mm of rain in a 24-hour period. It may also be triggered by significant slip movement recorded by geotechnical measuring equipment.
Alert - expect road to close due to rain
This is activated when the site receives more than 100m of rain in a 24-hour period.
Open - road open, single lane, drive safely
The temporary access road through the extreme slip site on Tyalgum Road is open under traffic light direction. Motorists are asked to please keep to the 40 km/h speed limit on the temporary access roadway and to be mindful of local wildlife.
During extreme wet weather you may wish to consider the alternative route from Tyalgum to Murwillumbah via Limpinwood, Chillingham and Crystal Creek (Limpinwood, Zara and Numinbah roads).
Take into account that it is longer in distance and travel time, however this route has undergone an extensive upgrade since the 2022 flood. View directions for the alternative route in Google Maps.
The Tyalgum Road temporary access road, once closed, is not able to be reopened until a geotechnical assessment is undertaken and approval given to open the roadway.
More information about the extreme slip
Measuring approximately 120 m in length and up to 10 m deep, the landslip forced closure of the road for some 20 months. It is the single largest damage repair job to the Tweed’s road network following the 2022 flood.
Road work is continuing on the extreme site with the first stage of piling completed. The temporary single-lane access expected to be in operation until at least the second half of 2024.
