Nicholl Park public toilet demolition

Nicholl Park.jpg

Council has made the decision to demolish the public toilet block at Nicholl Park. Built in the 1970’s, the facility no longer meets safety and accessibility standards and cannot be brought into compliance. Additionally, the toilets sustained damage during the floods in 2017 and 2022, and they have reached the end of their useful life.

Maintaining the facility has become increasingly difficult due to rising maintenance costs, ongoing vandalism, and outdated infrastructure. Usage of the toilet block is low.

Instead of rebuilding, we will direct users to alternative public toilets located just a 360-metre walk away in Wharf Park, on Wharf Street. After the demolition, Council plans to undertake minor landscaping to enhance the park's openness and improve visibility of the Tweed River.

In the coming year, Council is committed to addressing community needs by installing new toilets in areas with higher demand to better serve residents and visitors. Upgrades will occur at the following locations: Murwillumbah Railway Station, Barrie Smith Fields (Murwillumbah), Vic Bianchetti Sports Ground (Uki), Willward Park (Murwillumbah), New Fingal Boat Harbour (Fingal Head), Turnock Park and John Oxley Park (Chinderah), and Chillingham Community Centre.
