Bruce Chick Park car park upgrade and kayak launch site

Bruce-Chick.png

We are upgrading a section of the car park at Bruce Chick Park, located at Stotts Creek, adjacent to the Tweed River. This project aims to enhance the car park's visual appeal and improve accessibility for all visitors. Additionally, the upgrade will improve the car park's resilience to future weather events, ensuring it remains a reliable and welcoming space.

Situated near the Stotts Island Nature Reserve, the upgraded car park will continue to serve as a convenient launch point for kayaks and canoes, offering a great starting spot for a scenic 2-3 hour paddle around Stotts Island. We appreciate your patience and support as we work to enhance this valuable community asset.

Project schedule

  • Planning: End 2024
  • Construction: Early to Mid 2025

What’s involved

  • Installing a new asphalt access road with concrete edging
  • Adding a new stormwater pipe and associated headwalls
  • Removing an existing tree for the new drainage headwall
  • Constructing a kayak/canoe launching ramp and connecting concrete footpath (funded through a separate Boating Now grant from Transport for NSW)

Why it’s happening

Severe weather and flooding in 2022 caused significant damage to the internal access road and car park, including damage to the road surface and subsidence. This upgrade aims to address these issues and improve the overall functionality and durability of the car park.

How it’s getting done

Budget: Car park $132,000, Kayak launch site $200,000

Jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments.
