Community profiles and statistics
Australian Bureau of Statistics
In 2021 the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) undertook a nationwide census. The census provides a snapshot of Australia's people and their housing. This information is used to determine services and facilities you and your community need.
For more information on the 2021 census, you can visit the ABS.
The Tweed's Community profile
The Tweed Shire Council community profile uses data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census, officially called the Census of Population and Housing. It presents statistical information in a simple to follow format with helpful charts and graphs.
The profile allows you to access information about the population characteristics of our region, understand how these have changed over time and how they compare to other areas around the country. It also gives you an idea of what our population may look like in the future.
The profile is broken up into 4 main sections: community profile, social atlas, population forecast, and economic profile. In each section, you can access information about the Tweed region - and also the areas and suburbs within it.
Community profile
This community profile gives information on the population and demographics of the Tweed as a whole and the smaller areas within it (each suburb).
Social atlas
The social atlas presents statistics about the community such as population, average income, employment rates, the ages of people in a household, and so on.
Population forecast
The population forecast presents information about population numbers and their change over time, and what they are likely to look like in the future.
Economic profile
The economic profile presents information about the Tweed economy, how it has grown and what it may look like in the future. Here, information is gathered from the ABS and leading economic data modelling agency, The National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR).
What is this information used for?
Census information as presented in our community profile is used to inform community groups, Council, investors, business, students and the general public so that they can make confident decisions about the future.
For example, population and household data may be used to increase the number of schools or daycare centres in an area where there is likely to be a growth in the number of children between a certain age.
